Monmouthshire & Brecon Canal

Monmouthshire & Brecon Canal breach

Update February 2008: British Waterways is committing to a major programme of repairs to reopen the Monmouthshire & Brecon Canal in time for the 2009 cruising season. The first phase will enable British Waterways to complete essential repair work to the Gilwern breach and priority areas identified along the 16 miles of affected canal by March 2009.

Throughout this year’s planned repair work we are intending to keep the towpath open, putting in diversions as and when necessary. British Waterways is committed to securing the long term future of this beautiful, historic canal which plays such an important role in the life and economy of South Wales.

Thank you for your co-operation.

The Monmouthshire and Brecon Canal winds through 35 miles of peaceful countryside all the way from Brecon south to Cwmbran. Its pretty scenery and lightly-locked route make it understandably popular with holidaymakers.

The terminus at Brecon has been completely revitalised in recent years. This is the only major settlement on the canal - otherwise, it generally keeps away from the beaten track.

The canal passes through a World Heritage Site, which also contains industrial landmarks such as the Big Pit Mining Museum. As the Mon & Brec is not currently accessible from any other waterway, most people cruise it on a hire-boat. There are several fleets based on the canal.
