Getting ready for Council
27 January 2012
We received a good response to our recent call for candidates to stand for CRT Council. We know people feel passionately about our canals, and it is pleasing to see so many are willing to put themselves forward to voluntarily represent their 'constituents' on Council. We are just about finished the validation process and will be posting names and manifestos online on Tuesday 31 January.
The next step is to make sure you cast your vote. Voting packs will be sent week commencing 6 February and voting opens on Wednesday 8 February. You have a 30 day period in which to cast your vote so there's no rush if there is a delay in receiving your pack.
The Council is a new body and being involved with the election process has been a very interesting experience. I'm looking forward to finding out the outcome of the votes and to seeing canal users being able to play such a prominent role in helping to make the Canal & River Trust a success.

Am I right in assuming that only people who hold a waterways licence will receive a voting pack? I am at present having my liveaboard narrowboat built & I hope to be onboard at the end of March. As my boat won't be ready till then I obviously don't have a licence - does this mean I won't be able to vote?

No, I'm afraid only licence holders can vote. We already have a database of licence holders - other than that there is no practical way to decide who is a boater and to keep track of voting packs, votes and so on.

I think as one of the successful nominees for council, that boaters have a unique opertunity here to have their voices heard and urge everyone Eligable to vote to do so, if you don't you will have no grounds to complain In the future. I'm sure that the elected council members will make every effort to represent the views of their constituents. So please everyone don't waste your vote,my only worry is that councilors are elected only from the south/midlands and some. Regions are to be unrepresented
