Rugeley - Sunday morning

11 March 2010

Out of bed and drive to Rugeley. Find location and park at the end of Love Lane. Looks like it could do with a little love. Hear that Tesco is about to redesign the area. Time will tell if this will be good or bad.

Have camera and video camera. On site, cuppa tea, induction chat, smiles, enthusiasm, let's get on with it.

Fence removal, litter clearence, cutting back overgrown vegetation. Good things done. Not too much dog poo!

Interest from locals: a family rides past, several dog walkers, a couple of boats and a partridge in a pear tree. One bloke whinges as he passes that removal of the fence is an act of vandalism but returns 5 mins later with gloves on having decided to help.

Pictures taken but have fallen out with Facebook as it won't let me upload any pics.

Good times, good people, good work!

About 20 volunteers came including IWA members, local residents and BW staff. We had 2 members' boats for support and a BW workboat and lorry.

We worked for 3 hours and collected 20 black bags of rubbish, a cache of discarded large batteries, and a whole workboat full of wooden fencing that we demolished as it was rotting and falling down.

Nearly 2 miles of towpath and surrounding areas were cleared from The Mossley to Brindley Bank Aqueduct, where it was particularly bad around the steps on the offside.

A good example of volunteers and BW working together.

Well done and thanks to all involved.

I Went for a walk not sure of the name of location, but by the side of Rugeley Leisure centre. What a sad sight a lovely little walk spoiled by plastic bottles of which there were many, dog poop in bags (why cant these irresponsible dog owners go the whole hog and take them home). The amount of litter was a disgrace.

If the council havent got the resources to help with this terrible blot on the landscape. I.e. Bins which might encourage people to be tidier. I for one am up for a day clearing up this mess, it would be a huge task and would require lots of helpers.
