The people of Southall gave me the hump!

11 March 2010

My Towpath Tidy experience was very much a good one - but by 3pm, I have to admit, the people of Southall were starting to give me the hump!

I've never been able to work out why people drop litter - and after a number of hours spent picking it up and feeling very good about the experience, I was still none the wiser.  Not even the BW employees with many decades of experience between them or the volunteers from Sustrans could shed any light onto the subject.  Discarded cans, crisp packets, cigarette packets and shopping trolleys - you name it, the people of Southall (well certainly some of them) seem to think it is OK just to toss it into a hedge or onto a towpath.

In the most part the situation wasn't too bad.  However, at road bridges things certainly went down hill: rolls of carpet, bags of cement and even an old inflatable dingy.  I guess the only encouraging thing here is that these worst offenders are presumably just passing over our lovely canal and not actually using it.

You didn't mention the bags of dog poo hanging in the bushes.
