Aberdare Canal
This industrial South Wales waterway thrived throughout the early 19th century but was closed in 1900.
Today, the rapid pace of road and rail development in the South Wales valleys means that little remains of the canal. The canal was effectively a branch off the highly profitable Glamorganshire Canal, which is also derelict but of which more traces survive.
The Aberdare Canal Company even employed its own police officers to keep the local populace in good order!
