Cycling along the Aire & Calder Navigation

Not all of the Aire & Calder Navigation towpaths are suitable for cyclists. You must display a valid BW cycling permit on your bike at all times, and adhere to the Waterways Code. Permits can be downloaded free of charge.

Sections where cycling is allowed:

  • Bulholme to Castleford (1 km): Extra care required, dismount under narrow bridges.
  • Lemonroyd to Royal Armouries at Leeds (12km): Part of Transpennine Trail. Wide towpath, suitable for cycling. Dismount under all bridges.
  • Woodnook to Birkwood (2.4km): Take extra care - risk of pot-holes.
  • Birkwood to Stanley Ferry Road Bridge (1km): Take extra care - path can be narrow in places. Grass surface is muddy at times and there may be overhanging trees.
  • Stanley Ferry Road Bridge to Broadreach (2km): Take extra care - risk of pot-holes. Dismount under Harrison's Bridge.
