Walking along the Aire & Calder Navigation
The artificial canal sections of the navigation all have towpaths, but some of the river sections do not. In particular, there is no towpath access from Ferrybridge to Castleford; north from Castleford for two miles towards Leeds; and through central Wakefield.
The Transpennine Trail, a coast-to-coast route from the Humber to the Mersey, runs along the towpath. It forms part of a longer European route (the E8) from Turkey to the west coast of Ireland. For further information and maps of the Trail, contact the Transpennine Trail office on 01226 772574.
