Wildlife along the Aire & Calder Navigation
The Aire & Calder provides an important stronghold for plants and animals whose numbers are declining. These include water voles; freshwater sponges, which live on waterway walls and lock gates; white-clawed (native) crayfish; and floating water pondweed.
There are a number of inportant nature reserves alongside the canal, including Fairburn Ings RSPB reserve. The areas around Woodlesford, where a bird hide has been installed, and Methley are popular for bird watching.
