Boating along the Ashton Canal
The Ashton Canal is approximately six miles long. It forms a vital link in the South Pennine Ring and Cheshire Ring cruising circuits, as it connects the Rochdale and Bridgewater in central Manchester to the Peak Forest Canal at Portland Basin. Half a mile on in Ashton-under-Lyne at the first lock before Whitelands Tunnel, it also meets the Huddersfield Narrow Canal.
The Ashton Canal has 18 locks. Recent towpath and environmental improvements, as part of Manchester's successful Commonwealth Games in 2002, have largely dispelled the 'bandit country' reputation that the canal once suffered. Boaters will typically moor overnight either in central Manchester or around Dukinfield Junction, with the Peak Forest Canal, rather than on the Ashton Canal itself.
