Walking along the Barnsley Canal

The best-surviving section for the walker is between Walton and Cold Hiendley Reservoir. Here, the well-maintained canal towpath forms part of the Trans-Pennine Trail. The attractive route through woodlands passes an original canal bridge.

The canal is much in evidence, though less attractive, around Royston where it runs beside a railway line. A very wide, lake-like section just north of the village is particularly surprising.

The canal can also be walked from northern Barnsley towards its terminus at Barugh. However, this section is liable to be muddy and is perhaps best left to the dedicated enthusiast.
