Boating along the Basingstoke Canal

The Basingstoke Canal is open for exploration by visiting boats, or by hire-boat from the bases on the canal and the neighbouring River Wey and River Thames. Anyone who ventures up this particularly beautiful canal is sure to find the journey worthwhile. It is navigable for approximately 32 miles, running upstream from West Byfleet to the collapsed tunnel at Greywell – the limit of navigation. It has a total of 29 wide-beam locks, grouped into a series of flights - notably the 14 locks at Deepcut.

The collapsed 1230 yard Greywell Tunnel now marks the westernmost navigation limit of the Basingstoke Canal. A major engineering achievement, the tunnel is the second longest in southern England. Following the discovery in 1985 of a colony of bats within it, the tunnel has been designated a Site of Special Scientific Interest (SSSI), and a locked gate is now installed to conserve the tunnel as a winter hibernation and breeding habitat. The tunnel, and the severed final miles to Basingstoke, are unlikely ever to be restored.

Water supply problems sometimes render sections of the canal temporarily unnavigable, although works are underway to improve the situation. For the moment, restrictions apply, and you are likely to be accompanied through the lock flights by a Canal Ranger. Advance booking - by no later than 1pm before the day of arrival is essential. Be sure to bring your insurance certificate and Boat Safety Certificate (if applicable). For more information or to book a passage on the Basingstoke Canal call the Visitor Centre at Mytchett on 01252 370073 between 9am and 5pm Mondays to Fridays, or 10.30am to 5pm at weekends (Easter to the end of September only).

Low water levels can restrict the navigation of the Basingstoke Canal, especially in the summer months. Please check www.basingstoke-canal.co.uk for the latest information.
