History of the Bedford & Milton Keynes Waterway

The idea of connecting the Grand Union Canal in Milton Keynes to the River Great Ouse in Bedford was first proposed in 1810 by Samuel Whitbread, MP. The link would enable navigation between the then growing inland waterway network and the waterways of East Anglia: the only other connection, via Northampton, is impassable by broad boats and involves a long journey up the River Nene. The idea was revived in the 1990s and has gained momentum ever since.
