Walking along the Birmingham Canal Main Line

The canal in Birmingham city centre is easy to explore by foot, showing a picturesque side of this industrial city. It might not conform to everyone's idea of a "pretty canal", but the waterway is atmospheric and steeped in history.

Towpaths run through tunnels, behind Victorian factories, and past industrial heritage sites. One such is Smethwick Pumping Station. Opened in 1892, this historic landmark has been restored to its former glory and visitors can see the mighty steam engine and pump that kept the waterway flowing. See the 'cycling' section below for more details of what you can see along the canal.

Towpath trails

The Wolverhampton Locks Trail encompasses the conservation and enhancement of historic buildings and environment. A short walk from the canal, the exciting University City of Wolverhampton provides an extensive mix of pubs, bars and restaurants. You will also find a wealth of shopping centres, Dunstall Park – Europe's first all-weather floodlit racecourse and an impressive art gallery and museum – well worth a visit!

For children, Ollie the Otter's Canalside Adventure Trail commences from Brindleyplace, walking past the NIA, through the Jewellery Quarter, past Cambrian Wharf, back along the other side of the canal passing the ICC, via Gas Street Basin and then finishing at the National Sealife Centre. Otters like to keep themselves to themselves so if you don't see Ollie on the walk, you'll definitely get to see some of his friends in the Sealife Centre. Leaflets are available from the Canal Information Centre in Gas Street Basin (0121 632 6845).
