Walking along the Birmingham Canal Main Line

Take a walk along the Birmingham Canal Main Line

The canal in Birmingham city centre is easy to explore by foot, showing a picturesque side of this industrial city. It might not conform to everyone's idea of a "pretty canal", but the waterway is atmospheric and steeped in history.

Towpaths run through tunnels, behind Victorian factories, and past industrial heritage sites. One such is Smethwick Pumping Station. Opened in 1892, this historic landmark has been restored to its former glory and visitors can see the mighty steam engine and pump that kept the waterway flowing. See the 'cycling' section below for more details of what you can see along the canal.

Towpath trails

The Wolverhampton Locks Trail encompasses the conservation and enhancement of historic buildings and environment. A short walk from the canal, the exciting University City of Wolverhampton provides an extensive mix of pubs, bars and restaurants. You will also find a wealth of shopping centres, Dunstall Park – Europe's first all-weather floodlit racecourse and an impressive art gallery and museum – well worth a visit!

Towpath Stoppages

13 Dec 2011 until further notice

Towpath Closure only: Rabone Lane Bridge to Rolfe Bridge, Rolfe Street

Associated Regional Office: West Midlands Waterways

UPDATE (20 December 2011): Upon further investigation, it has been noted that the entire wall is in very poor condition and the likelihood of a further collapse is very high making use of the towpath dangerous. Until the situation can be resolved, we have reluctantly closed the section of the south towpath between Rabone Lane and Rolfe Street Bridge. The north towpath remains open during this time.
