Walking along the Birmingham Canal Old Main Line
The canal in Birmingham city centre is easy to explore by foot, showing a picturesque side of this industrial city. They might not be the most pretty canals in the country, but the waterway is atmospheric and steeped in history.
Towpaths run through tunnels, behind Victorian factories, and past industrial heritage sites. One such is Smethwick Pumping Station. Opened in 1892, this historic landmark has been restored to its former glory and visitors can see the mighty steam engine and pump that kept the waterway flowing.
