Acting as a link between the inner city and the countryside, the canal provides a watery pathway for wildlife to migrate into the city. Birds, fish, insects and mammals use the waterway to reach the doorsteps and back gardens of thousands of city dwellers.

Canal managers, British Waterways, are working to protect and enhance the different species and habitats - such as the rare water voles who make their home along the canal's banks.
