Walking along the Calder & Hebble Navigation

The towpath has recently been upgraded by British Waterways, and is becoming a popular venue for both keen and leisure walkers. The local rambling club has designed its own walks along the Calder & Hebble Navigation, which it publishes in separate format. Other organisations organise walks starting at local drinking holes, which are free and all are welcome to join.

The Brighouse Boundary Walk is a circular walk approximately 12.5 miles long which follows the C&H towpath around the town.

As is the case on many waterways, the towpath can be sporadic or non-existent along the river sections. The situation is better than in previous years, but you will still need to follow short diversions at:

  • Ledgard Flood Lock (Mirfield)
  • Cooper Bridge Lock to Kirklees Low Lock
  • Anchor Pit Lock to Brighouse Basin
