Most of the 20 mile length is rural, and is home to all manner of flora and fauna. The canal passes through the industrial heartland of the Potteries and then out into the wonderful rural scenery, where herons, kingfishers and other wildlife are regularly seen.

After the River Churnet joins the canal just above Consall Forge, the canal passes through a heavily wooded valley, known as 'Little Switzerland'.
