There is a backdrop of ancient woodland and areas of natural beauty in the area, and particularly along the Chelmer and Blackwater Canal. The canal falling into decline has meant that pockets of the Navigation are now home to a variety of plants and wildlife.

Much pondlife, which loves the tranquility of the canal's waters, can be found here, including hornworts, floating water lilies, branched bur reed and sponges and molluscs.

All sorts of amphibians and reptiles, like frogs, toads, newts and grass snakes will dip in and out of the waters. Moorhens, ducks and mute swans glide along the waters here. Swallows, thrushes and tits nest in the trees along the verges.
