Wildlife along the Coventry Canal

The Coventry Canal is a haven for rich and varied wildlife. Some very rare species can also be found amongst the more common dwellers and visitors to the canal. Pondlife loves the tranquility of the canal's waters: you may find hornworts, floating water lilies and branched bur reed.

Looking along the banks and in the hedges, you may find kingfishers, white-clawed crayfish, dragonflies and herons - and even the odd otter and water vole (look carefully!). Bats love the seclusion of bridges and tunnels, and all sorts of amphibians and reptiles - frogs, toads, newts and grass snakes - will dip in and out of the waters.
