Boating along the Crinan Canal
The Crinan Canal is one of the most beautiful waterways to sail in the UK offering sailors uninterrupted views of Scotland’s breathtaking and rugged natural landscape.
The nine-mile waterway operates on a seasonal basis and is open seven days a week in peak season; Monday to Saturday during spring and autumn; and Monday to Friday during the winter.
The canal welcomes mainly yachts and motor cruisers making their way between the Firth of Clyde and the west coast of Scotland.
Although it only takes five or six hours to sail the whole canal, why rush? Put the hustle and bustle of everyday life to one side and step into the slow-paced, relaxing world of boating by drinking in the peaceful surrounds and exploring the many different aspects the area has to offer.
Locks 1, 14 & 15 are fully automated and along with the bridges are operated by trained British Waterways staff. Inland locks are self service and require crew members ashore. Opening hours are published in advance and may be viewed in our stoppages & restrictions listings or downloaded from our Useful Downloads section.
When sailing the waterway, Skippers must allow 30-minutes for last locking before close-down to give staff time to make the flight ready for the evening.
The idyllic still water marina facility at Bellanoch is the ideal base from which to cruise the West Coast and also to enjoy the many top quality sailing events which take place through the yachting season, transit customers should note that Bellanoch Marina is reserved for use by long term customers only.
A limited Sweeper service is operated mainly to assist those able to achieve Sea Locks before evening close down. This service may also be available to enable inland part passage for those already in transit, subject to the level of demand and staff resources. Please note this service excludes Cairnbaan and Dunardry Bridges.

Notice to Mariners
Crinan Canal Draught Resriction
Mariners are advised that the maximum draught for transit vessels on the Crinan Canal has been reduced to 2.3metres (7 feet 5inches) fresh water.
However, by arrangement we may be in a position to raise the level to 2.5m. Customers are advised to contact the Crinan Canal Office (T 01546 603210) during working hours Monday to Friday to discuss particular passage plans.
This restriction is required to enable Engineers to carry out an inspection of the canal bank between Lock 14 and Lock 13 out and will remain in force until further notice.
British Waterways apologise for any inconvenience caused.
