Cycling along the Crinan Canal
The Crinan Canal is well suited to cycling, but cyclists should take account of the Scottish weather. The canal banks can get a little muddy and slippery during periods of heavy rain, and we would advise caution near the water's edge in such circumstances, particularly where young children are concerned.
Starting from Ardrishaig, follow the main road for a few hundred yards and take the turn up to Lock 4. There, you may either cross the bridge and take the surfaced road to Oakfield, or alternatively take the grass towpath, which leads on to Oakfield and beyond to Cairnbaan. Using both banks would make for a nice short circuit if you are limited by time.
From Cairnbaan you may either take the main road or towpath. To enjoy a relaxing ride with minimum traffic we recommend the towpath, which may be followed all the way to Crinan.
Cycles for both adults and children are available from Crinan Cycles from their shop in Lochgilphead (01546 603511), and Ardrishaig Community Trust (01546 606930).
