Cycling along the Derby & Sandiacre Canal

The Derby Canal Path is perhaps the best-quality cycle route along any unnavigable canal in Britain. It provides a well-surfaced, level, traffic-free path equally suitable for walkers and cyclists. Where a cycle path has been created, it forms part of the Sustrans National Cycle Network.

The southern section follows the canal route from Swarkestone to Pride Park, Derby. From here, separate cycle paths lead into the heart of Derby.

Alternatively, you can head east from Derby, roughly following the course of the River Derwent. The cycle route rejoins the canal at Draycott, from where it continues along an excellent quality canalside path to Breaston.

Detailed maps can be consulted at the Sustrans website.
