Holiday guide - Keswick
Nestled between the imposing bulk of Skiddaw Mountain and the serene expanse of Derwentwater, Keswick is the most popular holiday destination in the North Lakes. But, despite the dozens of day-trippers – and the title of ‘outdoor clothing capital of England’ – Keswick has retained its small-town charms. The Saturday market, held in the stately presence of the ancient Moot Hall, attracts as much local interest now as it did back in 1276 when Edward I granted Keswick its market charter.
Keswick Museum and Art Gallery reveals Keswick’s surprising journey from mining centre to tourist mecca, with some very famous residents. Admire a stunning collection of crystals, the original manuscripts of the lakeland poets and the celebrated Musical Stones. Culture buffs can go on to Gallery 26 at 27 and tour its impressive collection of contemporary sculpture, paintings, etchings and modern screenprints.
Few visitors to Keswick fail to enjoy the short stroll to the shores of Derwentwater. Why not make an occasion of it and hire a motor boat from the day? Or you can hop on the regular launch service and enjoy a chauffered tour of this much lauded lake. At the end of your day, sit back and be entertained at a performance in the Theatre by the Lake.
Three miles long, one mile wide and with a backdrop that is simply spectacular, Derwentwater has inspired and delighted some of the greatest minds in history. Famous literary figures, Coleridge, Wordsworth, Ruskin and Southey lost their hearts to the Queen of English Lakes, and Beatrix Potter spent many happy holidays here between 1885 and 1907.
