Literary Derwent

Beatrix Potter lived in the Lake District for many years, and many aspects of Cumbria captured her imagination throughout this time. She based her popular stories, The Tale of Benjamin Bunny and The Tale of Mrs Tiggy-Winkle in the tranquil countryside surrounding Derwent Water.

It has also been said that Beatrix was inspired to write her first story, The Tale of Squirrel Nutkin, while staying at Lingholm on the shore of Derwent Water. Her illustrations show the squirrels paddling across Derwent Water to reach Owl Island (based on St Herbert's Island).
