In March 2003, British Waterways constructed two large artificial islands of reeds, which are moored in the middle of Engine Pool to allow zooplankton, or minute aquatic creatures to thrive, whilst not disturbing the anglers. This will also have the effect of improving the water quality, as well as providing habitats for nesting birds, dragonflies and damselflies. There will also be an otter holt, bird and bat boxes.
