Boating along the Erewash Canal
The Erewash's course starts at Trent Lock, a waterway crossroads without compare. The mighty River Trent meets the River Soar here. The Soar and the Erewash came under common ownership in the 1930s, becoming part of the Grand Union's direct line from the Nottinghamshire coalfields to London and the south. There is a long-established houseboat community on the canal here.
Sandiacre Lock was once the junction with the Derby Canal. Today, it is arguably the best-kept lock of the 15 on the canal, and the headquarters of the Erewash Canal Preservation & Development Association. The Association was instrumental in keeping the Erewash navigable despite official curtailment in 1962. A short stub of the Derby Canal survives, and the dedicated explorer can trace the rest of the line on foot.
