Literary Erewash

It is perhaps surprising that a writer such as DH Lawrence, author of the once-controversial Lady Chatterley's Lover, was born and raised in the heart of a tightly-knit Nottinghamshire mining community.

Though he travelled widely in later life, Lawrence's formative years were spent among the slag heaps and collieries of the North east. A sensitive, sickly child, he did not quite fit the mining mould and spent much of his time wandering through the green countryside, the “country of my heart.”

Lawrence would follow rural lanes and the Erewash Canal through the rolling hills from Eastwood to Annesley. He visited the big houses of colliery owners, noted distinctive personality types and stored them away for future character development. Most vividly, the character of Mr Morel in Sons and Lovers is based on his Father, a rough tempered collier with a liking for ale.
