Walking along the Exeter Ship Canal
Riverside Valley Park follows the Exeter Ship Canal and offers a variety of long and short walks, depending on your appetite.
1. Canal Basin to Double Locks Pub - 1.5 miles / 30 mins - takes in Exeter Ship Canal Paper Mill and the Double Locks Pub is an excellent stop off for some refreshment.
2. Double Locks Pub to Topsham Lock Keepers Cottage - 2.25 miles / 50 mins - takes in the Double Locks Wetland, Devon Wildlife Trust Reserve, the River Exe and historic Topsham
3. Lock Keepers Cottage to Turf Hotel - 1.5 miles / 35 mins - takes in the Estuary Mud Flats, the Turf Lock Hotel (another excellent watering hole, and Exminster Marshes.
There are car parks for walkers at various places along the length of canal.
In the nearby Old Sludge Beds, there is a flat, though often waterlogged, 30-minute circular walk which returns along the canal's banks. Take appropriate footwear!
