Wildlife along the Gloucester & Sharpness Canal
The canal's location beside the tidal Severn makes it an ideal place for spotting coastal birds. But the best place to see these is at Slimbridge, headquarters of the Wildfowl & Wetlands Trust. Sir Peter Scott, a canal enthusiast and early supporter of the Inland Waterways Association, set up this internationally-renowned centre in 1946 when he realised how many thousands of geese depended on the shores of the Severn Estuary. Today, it is a magnet for thousands of rare birds every winter.
