1. Advice: Saddington Tunnel - Wide Beam passage

   Wide Beam boats wishing to travel through Saddington Tunnel must book passage.

   Passage is available Monday-Saturday at 8am ONLY and must be booked 48hrs in advance. Passage is not available on Sundays or Bank Holidays

   Unfortunately if you do not make your 8am slot you will have to wait to travel through the tunnel on the next available day. This is to reduce the disruption to other users of the canal needing to travel through the tunnel.

2. Restriction: Kings Lock 38 – Kilby Lock 30

   01 Aug 2011 until further notice

   Associated Regional Office: Central Shires Waterways

   UPDATE (07 December 2011): As a result of the continuing water shortage and the anticipated limited boat movements on this length, the canal will close temporarily over the Christmas and New Year period.

   The closure dates will be 25th, 26th and 27th December and 1st and 2nd January. Outside of these dates the canal will continue with the opening hours of 1000 hours – 1400 hours.

   We will continue monitoring the water situation and provide further updates where appropriate.

   UPDATE (20 October 2011): Update: Due to slightly improved water resources the restriction will remain in place and the navigation will continue to remain open between the hours of 1000 hours -1400 hours only, with a maximum draft of 2’ 4” (711mm). We will continue to review the situation on a weekly basis and advise when further information is available. Please see South East Waterways notice for restrictions from Locks 18-30.

   UPDATE (16 August 2011): Due to the continued dry weather, Lock 30 Kilby Lock - Lock 38 Kings Lock passage will now be restricted to the hours of 1000 hours -1400 hours. This will come into effect as of 1000 hours Friday 19th August.

   Padlocks will physically be in place on Lock 30 Kilby, Lock 31 Double Rail, Lock 32 Ervins and Lock 38 Kings Lock. We advise boaters not to navigate through any of the locks within this section outside of the restricted hours (i.e. Locks 33-37) in order to conserve the limited water resources.

   Boaters are advised that locking down through Kilby or up through Kings Lock after 1000 hours will result in them being locked within the flight, as passage takes approximately four hours. Please be advised that within this section we are aware that there are areas where anti-social behaviour takes place.

   Customers are advised that navigation between Kilby Lock No 30 and Kings Lock No. 38 is to be restricted to within the hours 0900 hours and 1600 hours each day.

   Unfortunately these measures need to be introduced to conserve water due to the current low water levels in Saddington Reservoir which feeds this section of the canal. BW will continue to monitor the reservoir holdings and will advise customers as necessary.

   Customers are advised that locking down through Kilby or up through Kings Lock after 1200 midday could result in them being locked within the flight as passage takes approximately four hours.

3. Restriction: Grand Union Leicester Line - Lock 18 Kibworth to Lock 30 Kilby

   UPDATE (16 August 2011): Due to the continued dry weather, Lock 18 Kibworth Top Lock - Lock 30 Kilby Lock on the Grand Union Leicester Line will now be restricted between the hours of 10am-2pm. This will come into effect as of Friday 19th August.

   Padlocks will physically be in place on Lock 18 (Kibworth), lock 23 (Newton Top), lock 29 (Bumblebee) within the South East section. However we do highly advise boaters not to navigate through any of the locks within this section outside of the restricted hours (10am-2pm) in order to conserve the limited water that we have.

   Further to the restriction that commenced 1st August from Kilby Lock 30 northwards (ref no. 5622), we are now extending the length of canal to be locked overnight southwards to Kibworth Top Lock 18.

   These measures are necessary given the extremely low water levels in reservoirs that supply the Leicester section of the Grand Union Canal. Customers are advised that passage between Kibworth Top Lock 18 and Kilby Lock 30 will take a full day and therefore they are likely to be held within the locked section.

   It is essential that boats double up when using locks in this location, we ask that boaters be patient and wait for other boats in order that we can conserve the little water we have available.

Welford Arm (Leicester Line) »

1. Advice: Welford Arm Lock 1

   28 Oct 2011 until further notice

   Associated Regional Office: South East Waterways

   Due to low water stocks in reservoirs the Welford Arm Lock 1 may be closed periodically to allow us to maintain water levels in the arm. This closure will allow the pump to move water to the Leicester summit back into the arm to help the water level.

   Whether or not this action is required will depend on the number of boats passing through Welford Lock 1.

Welford Arm (Leicester Line) »

1. Advice: Grand Union Leicester Line - Welford Arm - Water point

   Please be aware the water point is closed at Welford due to a water supply issue, the nearest alternative is North Kilworth Wharf.

   The water point will remain closed until the 10th February.
