Cycling along the Grand Western Canal

The towpath runs alongside the canal and beyond, for a total of 16 miles between Tiverton and the border with Somerset. It's an easy ride through the tranquil and varied countryside of Devon. There is now a link from Willand and Tiverton Parkway Station to the canal.

The canal towpath is part of the 250-mile West Country Way cycle route from Padstow to Bristol. You can get on or off at any of the road bridges en route. Sustrans publishes detailed route maps of the way.

There are many other smaller cycle routes in and around the area.

The towpath is primarily for walkers and therefore cyclists should always give them right of way and even dismount, if necessary, particularly under bridges.

Cycle hire is available beside Greenway Bridge in Halberton. For more information, call 01884 820728.
