Walking along the Grand Western Canal
Eleven and a half miles of towpath provides a scenic walk through sheltered woodland and wooded cuttings to open countryside with views as far as the Blackdown Hills. The canal provides a long linear walk along the towpath, which is connected to a number of circular walking routes.
The towpath, which is also part of the Two Counties Way, is flat, accessible from all the road bridges and well maintained in most areas. The Rangers have an ongoing programme of towpath maintenance and parts of it have been resurfaced recently. Disabled access is provided in a number of areas along the canal and parts of the towpath are suitable for wheelchairs. Please contact the rangers to find out more details.
There are picnic sites at Tiverton, Halberton and Sampford Peverell. Car parks are available at Tiverton, Manley Bridge, Sampford Peverell, Burlescombe and Lowdwells. Refreshments can be found at Tiverton Basin, Halberton, Sampford Peverell and Burlescombe.
