Huddersfield Narrow Canal »

  1. Restriction: Lock 16W to 17W

    13 Apr 2008 until further notice

    Associated Regional Office: BW North-West

    A retaining wall has collapsed onto the towpath between 16W and 17W on the Huddersfield Narrow Canal; as such the towpath has been closed for health and safety reasons. Navigation is not affected.

    Pedestrians are requested to follow the diversion notices that are in place.

  2. Advice: Standedge Tunnel

    UPDATE (23 September 2011): Following on from the confirmation of stoppages on the East side of the canal to allow a third party to remove the Sellers Tunnel we have become aware of a potential discrepancy in the opening hours stated on the internet for Standedge Tunnel over the winter peiod.

    Because of the general closure of the East side of the canal from 1st October 2011, there will be no passages through Standedge Tunnel for travel to Huddersfield during the stoppage period.

    The trip boat operation at Standedge Visitor Centre will continue as advertised.

    We apologise for any confusion caused.

    The canal re-opens over its entire length on Saturday 1st April 2012.

  4. Stoppage: Sellers Tunnel/Lock 3E

    Development project to move Lock 3(E) to new location after removing Sellers Tunnel.

    Third party scheme to remove Sellers Tunnel, open up the canal and move Lock 3(E) to raise the water level in the canal, creating a new waterfront in Huddersfield.

    British Waterways are also going to carry out an intensive lock gate change programme on the HNC (E) between Standedge Tunnel and Lock 4(E).

    To allow localised dewatering of lock chamber for major grouting works at Halls Lock 20w.

    The navigation and towpath will be closed between Locks 21 and 20 West to allow installation of grout into lock chamber and towpath approach to seal extensive leakage.

    A towpath diversion will be in place.
