Walking along the Huddersfield Narrow Canal
With 74 locks, the Huddersfield Narrow Canal is a steeper walk than some canals but still perhaps the most relaxing way for walkers to discover Pennine scenery. At Standedge, you can either join a boat convoy for an unforgettable passage through the tunnel, or walk over Marsden Moor and marvel at the wild scenery. (Passage through the tunnel is only possible on some days and must be prebooked.)
The canal also opens up many opportunities for walks into the Pennines - not just at Marsden Moor, but along the valleys on either side. The area near Scout Tunnel, east of Stalybridge, is particularly attractive.
The Pennine Way is one of Britain's most popular - and arduous - National Trails. It crosses over the Standedge ridge while the canal tunnel burrows underneath. Sections of the Pennine Way can be combined with the Huddersfield Narrow Canal towpath and its neighbour, the Rochdale Canal, to create attractive new walking routes.
The Huddersfield Canal Society has produced a towpath guide. Find out more about 'The Huddersfield Canal - a Towpath Guide'.
