As part of the restoration of the canal, two new tunnels were created under factories in Huddersfield that had been built over the waterway.

Special habitat sites were created for the endangered white-clawed crayfish during construction of these tunnels. Crayfish live below water in gaps in drystone wash walls and the new channel was built to emulate this shelter.

In addition, sensitive planting on top of the walls softened the canal edges and created habitat for birds whilst small nesting platforms, shielded by ivy, were welded into the wall recesses. Planting troughs along the canal have visually enhanced the urban landscape and now provide new habitats for the crayfish at the heart of town.
