Stoppage: Bradford On Avon Lock 14

Associated Regional Office: Kennet & Avon Waterways

UPDATE (11 March 2010): Further to the published stoppage from 8th March to 11th March 2010, initial investigations have revealed that Bradford on Avon Lock is in a much worse condition than anticipated. In order to establish the full extent of repair works required it is necessary for the lock to remain closed until Friday 19 March 2010. During this period, a flexible dam will be installed upstream to allow investigation of the lock approach walls and gate forebay. Diving operations may be necessary to complete this work.

This investigation work relates to an effort to address annual water resource related problems associated with Bradford Lock. Pound levels between Bradford and Semington are often low; this investigation seeks to identify the source of this problem. The outcome of the work will be published locally, for information. Note that in conjunction with this survey work, current pumping arrangements and equipment have also been reviewed; an intial outcome is the purchase of new non-return valves that will replace the existing ineffective ones.

Thank you for your continued patience.

Please note that Lock 14 will be closed to navigation between the hours of 08.00 on 8th March 2010 to 17.00 on 11th March 2010.

This is to allow for the investigation of the pumping chamber and rising main and for replacement of the failed valves in the pumping main. In order for these works to be carried out the lock chamber needs to be dewatered in order to gain access to the lower half of the pump chamber.

Water levels between Semington Lock 15 and Bradford On Avon Lock 14 may be reduced due to lack of water supply. Craft owners should make suitable adjustments when mooring to allow for the fluctuation of water levels.
