Walking along the Kennet & Avon Canal

Families walking along the towpath of the Kennet & Avon Canal

The towpath has been extensively restored as part of the restoration programme. Though parts have been rebuilt to cycleway standard, there are also attractive rural lengths through uncultivated fields, as at Hungerford Meadows. With the exception of lock flights such as at Devizes, most of the towpath is level.

The path is well signposted from Reading to Bath. From Bath to Bristol, there is no towpath, but your walk can continue along the Avon Walkway. A number of self guided walk leaflets (Discovery Trails) are available from local British Waterways offices (Tel: 01380 722859), illustrating circular walks along and by the canal.
