Fishing along the Kielder Water

Kielder Water stocks wild brown and stocked rainbow. Bank and boat fishing (fly and worm) is permitted. There are three fishing lodges at the reservoir: beside the dam (south bank), at Leaplish Waterside Park and at Bakethin Weir from Leaplish Visitor Centre. Tel: 01434 250312.

Kielder Forest District has about 600km of water courses. Many of the streams are tiny headwaters feeding the main tributaries of the Rivers North Tyne and Rede and too small to offer good fishing. The larger main tributaries have good stocks of native brown trout which provide good sport for the active fisherman.

The main streams for fishing in the forest are:- Kielder Burn, Lewisburn, Plashetts Burn, Belling Burn, Chirdon Burn, Tarset Burn, Warksburn and the River Rede. Visitors should park up in the indicated car parks and enter the forest on foot.

All legal methods of fishing are permitted to 31 July. Fly-only continues on into August and September. There is no bag limit.

Daily/Weekly fishing permits for the forest are available from Kielder Castle Forest Park Centre. Tel: 01434 250209. Environment Agency Rod Licenses are available from Kielder or Bellingham Post Office. Tel: 01434 220201.
