Benefits

The Liverpool Canal Link project will support the continuing regeneration aims of partner organisations for the Liverpool Waterfront and the central docks. It will bring a wide-ranging basket of benefits to the Leeds & Liverpool Canal corridor and the wider Merseyside area that are identified in the economic appraisal of the project undertaken by AMION Consulting. These include:

  • An estimated 200,000 extra visitors annually to the Liverpool Waterfront who may spend an extra £1.9 million each year
  • Over 4,500 boat visits each year including visiting private boats, holiday hire boats, trip boats, and restaurant boats
  • An estimated £2.2 million in expenditure annually on boating related activities
  • 187 person years of temporary construction-related employment
  • 173 net additional local jobs
  • An estimated £3.3 million per annum in net additional gross value added (GVA)
  • An increase in likely property prices in the immediate canal link area and wider corridor

Wider socio-economic impacts will include:

  • Improved City image
  • An additional catalytic effect on regeneration
  • Added interest to the Mersey River Festival
  • Wider environmental improvements
  • Increased heritage access and interpretation benefits
  • Social and community benefits
  • Increased recreation and amenity resources for the area
  • Historic and environmental educational resource

The Liverpool Canal Link will allow free navigation for canal craft throughout the Liverpool Waterfront. The presence of activity will add a vibrancy to the area that is hard to quantify. The Link will grace the Waterfront for the benefit of all.
