Total distance: 1.25km
Recommended access points: 2

"Mighty Pontcysllte Aqueduct is a candidate for World Heritage Status."

The world famous Pontcysyllte Aqueduct is located on this stretch. A large car park offers level entry on to the canal towpath. Another access point from the opposite side of the canal leads to the café area. Entry is through a hinged gate which is generally closed after 5.00pm. From this point, cross a small footbridge to access the towpath. The main car park offers an alternative starting point.

The aqueduct is about 300 metres to the left of the car park. There is a narrow swing bridge on the approach which is wide enough for a single motorised wheelchair. The towpath is good with a smooth hard surface. The site has an information centre, plus toilet and café. The width of the towpath narrows across the aqueduct to 0.8 metres. Elsewhere it is generally over 1.2 metres in width.

The next recommended access point is Froncysyllte. A small car park on the opposite side of the canal offers level access to the towpath via a swing bridge. Seating provides the walker an opportunity to enjoy the tranquil environment. The towpath section has three gates, one at Froncysyllte approaching the aqueduct and two by bridge 27. The last of these gates is narrow and can pose difficulty for wheelchair users.

Total distance: 750 metres

"Spectacular views across the valley."

Park at Chirk Bank just along the canal. The towpath surface is level tarmac with no barriers or gates. Walk towards Chirk Aqueduct for a spectacular view of the valley and arched railway viaduct, carrying the line between the historic border towns of Wrexham and Shrewsbury.
The towpath is over 1.5 metres wide but narrows on the aqueduct to about 1.0 metre. Benches are sited on the other side of the aqueduct just before the tunnel.

Another access point from here leads into Chirk town. The towpath has a smooth tarmac surface, although there is also a steep gradient on this section.

3) Recommended section
Llangollen Town to Bridge 44

Total distance: 1.5km
Recommended access points: 1
Star grading star rating star rating

"Picnic tables offer walkers a chance to enjoy their food with a view."

Llangollen’s main car park is located in the town centre. Consider setting down visitors who have mobility difficulties at Bridge 45 near the Canal Wharf Café before parking. Access through Bridge 45 on to the towpath is almost level. The towpath has a smooth tarmac surface with no barriers or gates.

From here, walk beneath the bridge towards Trevor. The towpath narrows at this point but does permit wheelchair access. A service facility is located about 300 metres from Bridge 45, which can be opened with a special British Waterways key.

The towpath becomes unbound dirt after 500 metres with the surface uneven in patches. Picnic tables and benches are located towards the end of the section offering a sweeping view across the valley.
