Fishing along the Llangollen Canal

There are good fish stocks on the Llangollen Canal. Roach, dace and gudgeon are the most common, and small specimens are easy to tempt in the cloudy waters of summer.

In the winter months, the clear water makes fishing more difficult but a careful approach can produce bigger fish, particularly in the lengths around Chirk and Llangollen. Large chub and perch of surprising size can be found where there is overhead cover and few wide areas are without a resident shoal of bream waiting for the angler’s bait!

Several stretches of canal are leased to local angling associations and clubs, including:

  • Hurleston Locks to Little Mill Bridge 55: Rubery Owen Angling Club and Waterway Wanderers.
  • Ellesmere to Tetchill: Oswestry Dist Angling Club.
  • Tetchill to Prices Bridge 68 and Nicholas Bridge 2 to Kings Bridge 49A: Waterway Wanderers.
  • Hurleston Locks to Hampton Bank Bridge No 50: Waterways Wanderers Permit/Waterways Anglers Together.
