Community project for Llangollen Canal

Llangollen Canal

The Pontcysyllte Aqueduct & Canal Project

An imaginative grass roots initiative is ensuring communities living along Wales' newest World Heritage Site now have a say in its future. Pontcysyllte Aqueduct & Canal Project is a partnership formed after extensive public consultation on the successful World Heritage Site Nomination.

The area's elevation to World Heritage status means the enthusiasm and local expertise of these communities is being harnessed to ensure this unique asset is sustainably managed and carefully developed.

Now the project is strengthening links among communities along the 11 mile corridor.

A wide range of inclusive initiatives is underway, featuring:

  • Wildlife surveys and habitat construction to ensure native creatures thrive;
  • Engaging community members in heritage and environmental skills training;
  • Specialist talks and community meetings to progress the project's aims;
  • Access improvements at key canal points, enabling communities and visitors alike to enjoy this leisure amenity;
  • A canals conference focusing on 'future proofing' management of the site;
  • Establishing a Friends Group to ensure this shared vision is sustained going forward.

The venture embraces Chirk, Pentre, Froncysyllte, Trevor, Garth, Pontcysyllte, Llangollen, Pentrefelin and Llantysilio and is engaging with individuals, businesses, schools and interest groups.

This is part of a Community Development Project which is a partnership of British Waterways, Northern Marches Cymru, Wrexham County Borough Council and Cadwyn Clwyd.

This project has received funding through the Rural Development Plan for Wales 2007-2013 which is funded by the Welsh Assembly Government and the European Agricultural Fund for Rural Development.
