London Docklands
Originally built around the Isle of Dogs to cater for rapidly expanding shipping, London's Docklands now comprise skyscraping offices, convenience shops and upmarket pubs around a cosmopolitan waterside setting.
At their busiest, London's docks employed over 100,000 people. Now they are home to restaurants, bars, housing, and all manner of businesses and leisure facilities, both on land and on the water. The reclamation of Docklands for commerce, housing and entertainment has given this area a wonderful new life.
Marinas such as that at West India Dock keep the tradition of boating alive, and you may be lucky enough to see a historic Thames sailing barge pass by. The Excel exhibition centre at Royal Victoria Dock is home to the annual London Boat Show.
