Walking along the Macclesfield Canal
The towpath is in good condition with many stretches suited to short walks. The canal also forms part of the Cheshire Ring Canal Walk, a 97-mile walk linking six historic canals, including the Macclesfield, Peak Forest and Trent & Mersey.
There is a particularly extensive footpath network within the Bollin Valley. Cheshire County Council also promote walks around the canal area, taking in Church Lawton, Congleton, Macclesfield, Bollington and Poynton.
The 'Middlewood Way' runs along the line of the closed Macclesfield, Bollington & Marple Railway near the canal, of which only a short stub to Rose Hill station is still in use. This is excellent for family walking, riding and cycling, with picnic sites along the way. There are several footpath links between the towpath and the Middlewood Way, opening up many possibilities for circular walks.
