The canal is a haven for rare wildlife. Water voles have been spotted at several locations, and even the very rare osprey has been sighted over the canal.

Canalside hedgerows and ditches are rewarding habitats for much of the waterway's wildlife. The canal at Poynton, Stockport, is particularly prized for its wildlife value in a predominantly urban setting.

Macclesfield Forest contains a harmonious layering of coniferous forest, lakes and moorland, with wildlife including herons. For information, call 01260 252268.
