Fishing along the Makin Fisheries

A young angler at Makin fisheries in Warwickshire

The complex was constructed in three stages and each of the three phases has its own entrance and car park.

Phase 1 has five lakes which are quite large with islands to fish to. Most of the carp are in the 4lbs to 6lbs range but there are lots of doubles and the occasional twenty in each lake apart from Lake 3 where the fish are generally smaller. All of the lakes contain a huge stock of silver fish as well as some orfe and barbel. Some of the barbel are big and there is always an outside chance of landing a double. On Lake 1, pegs 8 to 12 on the bank opposite the car park are particularly noted as big producers in winter and the car park bank is always popular in summer. Pegs opposite the islands tend to be the best producers in summer.

Lake 1 and Lake 5 are generally reserved for pleasure anglers although in winter we allow the large winter leagues to use the far bank pegs 1 to 20. Very occasionally if we have a big corporate event or if we are hosting one of the major national championships we close Lake 5 and Lake 1 to pleasure anglers.

Feeder or straight bomb legering are the most used methods on this phase casting tight to the islands in summer or into open water in winter. In summer floating dog biscuits will account for massive catches particularly using the candle rig.

Phase 2 has 7 lakes which are much smaller than those on Phase 1 and all these lakes have bags of features including marginal cover and small islands. Carp make up the bulk of the stock with most of them around the 4lbs mark although doubles are present in all of the pools. Lagoon and Lizard also contain some decent chub and bream and afew big barbel. Peg 15 is the flier peg on Snake Pool and this peg is fished most days of the week. The pools were designed for pole fishing although rod and line methods will work well on Lagoon Pool and Lizard Pool which are slightly larger lakes. Straight bomb with corn is well worth a try.

Phase 3 was constructed in 1995 and all 6 lakes are out and out pole fishing pools. The carp are up to around 6lbs except on Derwent Pool and Inner Avon Pool where there are good numbers of doubles. There are also lots of barbel up to a couple of pounds or so in Thames Pool and Avon Pool. Pegs 1 and 30 on Derwent Pool are particularly popular pegs and either side of the footbridge on Avon Pool is also a good area to try. In 2004 Inner Avon Pool produced some big catches for pleasure anglers and this pool also produced the top weight in some big matches.
