Walking along the Manchester Ship Canal

Because the Manchester Ship Canal was one of the last canals of the waterway age, it was built for motorised vessels - including ships - and there was no need for a towpath. Consequently, there is limited access to the waterside. An access track follows the north bank of the navigation for some way, used by theTrans-Pennine Trail long-distance cycling and walking route between Wilderspool and Latchford, Warrington.

You may walk along the south bank of the canal from Salford Quays to the Pomona Lock Branch, which joins the Bridgewater Canal. However, there is no footpath connection between the two canals here, so you will need to retrace your steps.

The Glaze Brook Timberland Trail is an 11-mile walk which takes you from Pennington Flash Country Park in Leigh to the Manchester Ship Canal at Cadishead in Salford. It is well signposted and you should allow between three and five hours from start to finish.
