Market Weighton Canal
Nature lovers and anglers should take a trip to the peaceful Market Weighton Canal in East Yorkshire.
The Market Weighton Canal runs from the Humber Estuary north through Newport to the disused Sod House Lock. The line once continued all the way to the bustling town of Market Weighton, a few miles further north. This is one of Yorkshire’s quiter waterways – with just a handful of farms and fisheries dotted along its length (anglers should head for Newport). Walkers, remember your binoculars as dragonflies are often spotted along the Market Weighton Canal.
Whitton Sands on the Humber Estuary is an important wetland site. Grey seals are not uncommon sightings.
