Melton Mowbray Navigation

The long-closed Melton Mowbray Navigation follows the course of the River Wreake, winding gently through quiet Leicestershire countryside. Closed for 125 years, it is now being restored to navigation.

The Melton Mowbray Navigation was built to connect Melton Mowbray, home of pork pies and Stilton cheese, to the national waterways network near Leicester. It is now largely derelict, but since the navigation was based on a natural river - the River Wreake - the route and structures have escaped obliteration. Restoration work has started in Melton Mowbray with towpath improvements and the construction of a new slipway, allowing boats to be launched into a short cruising circuit.
