Walking along the Middle Level Navigations

Middle Level Main Drain. © Dr. Charles Nelson -

Many of the Middle Level waterways do not have towpaths. The flat surroundings and sparse settlements mean that these drains are not ideal towpath walking territory.

However, there are roads and tracks along several of the drains, such as the Sixteen Foot Drain (follow the B1098 from Chatteris to Upwell) and the Forty Foot Drain. Perhaps the best way to discover the Middle Level, then, is by car, which will allow you to see the sights without spending hours walking in a straight line.
